The mill looked splendid for our Event Day on 7th July as the two sweeps that had been on the ground for repainting were rehung just 4 days before the event!  Superb weather encouraged the consumption of ice cream and soft drinks to exceed all records!  As usual mill memorabilia was on sale and Pete the Magician gave an exciting magic show for the children. The Copper Family Singers rounded off the day by entertaining the crowd while sitting on the mill steps. They sang traditional Sussex Folk Songs for an hour, introducing each song with a few words about which area (or even village) the song originally came from and which group of labourers would have sung it (e.g. potato pickers). It created a very atmospheric occasion; John Copper said how appropriate it was to be singing in such a beautiful traditional setting! We hope to make this a regular annual visit for the singers.  We were blessed, too, with wonderful weather for our smaller Open Afternoon on 4th August and sufficient wind to allow us to turn the sweeps, much to the delight of visitors and people just passers-by.

Remaining dates for your diary this year

Our last Event Day, with a ‘Family Fun’ theme, is on 1st September, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.  We will have our regular entertainer, Pete the Magician plus a Jack and the Beanstalk puppet show, especially written for us!  There will also be a number of games aimed at entertaining children of all ages and we hope to have a selection of small animals on display.  A free shuttle bus will run from the Thatched Inn, Ockley Lane, via Age Concern, Dale Avenue as there is no parking at the mill.  As always refreshments and memorabilia will be available.  Do join us for an afternoon of fun for all the family.

Our final Open Afternoon is on 6th October, 2 – 5 p.m., when refreshments and memorabilia will be available and volunteers will be on hand to give guided tours of the mill.

Restoration and maintenance

Attention is now being focused on the Tail Pole (the large pole extending from the rear of the mill used to turn it to face the wind), the Mill Steps and the body of the mill.
