PRESTIGIOUS SUSSEX HERITAGE AWARD FOR OLDLAND MILL At the Sussex Heritage Trust Awards Ceremony in Chichester, Oldland Mill Trust received the Sussex Heritage Public & Community Award, sponsored by The Lady Joseph Foundation. This major award does justice to the team of volunteers who have worked tirelessly over the past thirty years to restore the mill to her former glory. Oldland Windmill was built in 1703 and was used commercially until 1912 when she was abandoned. She is a Grade 2 Listed Building. Restoration work commenced in 1980 and is now virtually complete with flour being ground again in 2008. She was rebuilt by a team of 20 local volunteers using the original components or identical materials where necessary. Two retired Millwrights, Danny Jarmann & Mike Peat, provided guidance. The slate plaque, presented to Chairman Professor Fred Maillardet, will be on display at the mill. The mill is also open every Thursday throughout the year when the volunteers are happy to show the public what they have achieved.
News Update - April Oldland Mill Trustees prepare to join the nation as it swings into Celebration Mode this summer and hope you will join us at our QUEEN'S DIAMOND JUBILEE - SPECIAL EVENT - SUNDAY 3RD JUNE. We will be organising a Special Event Starting at 2 p.m. to celebrate not only the QUEEN'S DIAMOND JUBILEE but also the CENTENARY OF THE ABANDONMENT OF OLDLAND WINDMILL IN 1912! FANCY DRESS COMPETITION for both children (up to 14) and adults. The two themes will be Royalty or Everyday Wear in 1912. CHILDREN'S BRAN TUB JUBILEE CRAFT STALL CREAM TEAS as well as the usual home made cakes, tea, coffee and soft drinks will be available. As always visitors will be given a tour of the inside of the mill to view for themselves the amazing work carried out by volunteers to restore this great Sussex landmark to her former glory. Further dates for your diaries Our second Event Day on 1st July, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m., will be a smaller occasion in view of the 3rd June celebrations. The final Event day, with a Wildlife theme, will be on 2nd September, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. Remaining Open Days are on 5th August and 7th October from 2 - 5 p.m. A shuttle bus operates from the Thatched Inn on Event Days (but not Open Days) as there is no parking at the mill. As always, visitors are welcome at the mill any Thursday when volunteers are there to continue the essential maintenance and ongoing restoration. Maintenance and Restoration Work continues on installing the dresser, being focussed on mounting the drive gears which are located on the end and cutting and jointing the long leather belts which will be used to drive the dresser. The kitchen revamp is now complete. A new small marquee has been purchased to replace the one blown down and severely damaged in the storm immediately following the September Event Day last year. However, always resourceful, the team have salvaged the remains of the old marquee to construct a BBQ Gazebo for use on Event Days ! Marketing This is a plea again this month for someone with Marketing expertise to help develop our mill marketing strategy. Can you help? If so please e-mail Chairman, Professor Fred Maillardet
